BIG UPSET!!!

Windthorst Trojans traveled to Division 1-1A #4 Graford Saturday afternoon and upset the jackrabbits 79-65. I heard some Graford fans say this was their first home loss in over three years.

This was a solid, follow-up win for the Trojans after they won their own tournament, on Tuesday, by defeating 3A Henrietta 64-50 in the championship game.

Another good victory for the Windthorst Trojans as they held Temerick Reagans under 20 points and defeated Munday 46-23 Chandler King led the Trojans with 13 points and 6'6" Zack George's presence in the paint deterred Reagans from his usual big game.

Next up is a tough non-district battle vs Throckmorton with ACU signee Hayden Farquhar who posted 45 points vs #1 1A Texline last week.

What a ballgame in Trojan gym last night! Trojans rallied for 71-64 over the Archer City Wildcats. Trailed by 10 heading to the 4th quarter 44-54, but offensively came alive and lit it up after shooting below 40% in the first 3 quarters. AC lit it up through the 1st 3 quarters and were probably shooting at around 75%-80% in my guestimating opinion. TRN writer told me AC didn't miss a 3pt attempt in the 1st half. While they were smoking hot from beyond the arc, we were ice cold from the free throw line which lead to a 29-36 halftime deficit. According to the TRN we were 7 of 17 from the FT line for the line game. We made 5 of our last 6 as we pulled away.

We had no answer for Case Caldwell who scored 32 to lead the Wildcats.

We got hot shooting in the 4th QTR and equally important, we controlled the boards the last quarter not allowing Archer City second and third opportunities at their basket.

Trojans get a chance to reverse an earlier loss to the Olney Cubs tomorrow night but they will have to play lock-down, tight defense like they did vs Graford. If they play like they did vs Archer City and Petrolia, then Olney's sharp shooters will pick us apart again. We must stop their second and third opportunities and control the boards.

For the most part AC wasn't scoring off 2nd and 3rd opportunities Tuesday night - they got open looks and knocked them down early. They also hit some tough shots while be being defended as well. 4th qtr rolled around and we hit the open looks and the tough shots they took didn't drop as they did in the first 3 quarters.

Correct, they made nearly everything but it also appeared they successfully followed up their few misses. Worst first half since Throckmorton game. We must find a way to start games faster like we did in Graford. Came out hot that game and never let up.

Windthorst Trojans fought hard but lost a second time to the Olney Cubs. With Petrolia's victory over Archer City, the district standings remain:
1) Olney
2) Windthorst
3) Petrolia
4) Archer City
5) Electra
6) Seymour

Plenty of basketball left but I would be surprised if the top three above is not how the playoffs end up seeded.

Windthorst Trojans and Trojanettes both won big over Seymour last night. Boy won 52-29 and girls won 78-52. The Trojans remain in 2nd place behind Olney while our Trojanettes are undefeated in district and looking to make a deep playoff run this year. Good luck to both of them during the last week (next week) of the regular season.

Win clinched the district title for the girls.

Big game for the boys Friday night at home against Petrolia. A win would all but clinch 2nd while a loss would still leave some work to clinch.

Yes indeed, Friday is a very BIG game. Trojans only won by 2 points I believe in Petrolia. We host the Pirates Friday night and let's hope the home crowd helps our boys on to victory.

BTW, Archer City's near upset of Olney last night sure could have thrown a wrench into the district standings.

Interesting game plan by the Seymour girls coaching staff last night. They decided to try and take Windthorst PG Tatum Veitenheimer out of the game by having three different girls guard her and bump her often to keep her from making runs at the basket. It slowed her down for a little while but her key passing and hot shooting of her fellow Trojanettes were too much for Seymour. The end result was three Seymour players guarding her all fouled out and Windthorst won by 26.

Girls
1. Windthorst
2. Seymour
3. Archer City

Boys
1. Olney 8-0
2. Windthorst 6-2
3. Petrolia 5-3
4. Archer City 3-5

Windthorst with 2 wins over Petrolia needs to beat Electra or AC to clinch 2nd or Petrolia lose one of their final two. Petrolia with 2 wins over AC will finish at worst 3rd and AC has been eliminated from playoff contention.

I believe Windthorst Trojans have a decent chance of beating Electra or AC, however, I feel Petrolia will have to play a perfect game to get a win over Olney tomorrow.

We are talking about 15-18 year olds anything is possible. Petrolia gave Olney everything they wanted and more in the first match-up at Olney, a 65-62 win for the Cubs. I know last year is last year, but the Pirates put a beatdown on us at their place to end their season. If the ball is dropping for them they are difficult team to stop on the offensive end of the floor.

Will be interesting to see how Electra comes out tonight against us - are they just playing out the string or focused and want to try and throw a wrench in the standings? They played with us for a half at home before we pulled away in the second half.

My biggest surprise is it took you this long to respond. :)) Yes, indeed, Petrolia put a whooping on us the last game at their place last year; I think we were too happy about making the playoffs and didn't bring our A game. Is Olney at Petrolia tonight? If so, then I could see Petrolia winning the game as they have nearly as many sharp shooters as Olney does.

I'm hoping my Trojans come out fast tonight and put the game away early. Playing AC on Friday at Archer will be dramatic enough without having to fight for playoff seeding as well.

Girls won and went undefeated in district to claim the tile. Boys came out flat on Electra's Senior night and they paid the price with a 52-55 loss to the Tigers. However, Olney defeated Petrolia so the seeding above remain the same.

Fully expect this loss to rile up the Trojans for their match-up with the Archer City Wildcats on Friday night.

Windthorst Trojans suffered a four point loss, 87-83, at Archer City Friday. Pretty rough game with questionable ref'ing (very poor, refs never had control of the game). But the reason Trojans lost was that AC made more free throws than we did down the stretch and deserved the victory. Good ending for AC seniors.

Trojans waiting to see who this first round playoff opponent will be.

Windthorst Trojanettes has a fantastic season making it to the Regional tournament. Lost to a very good Bells team but our girls will be back. All starters return next year including 2 of the top 3 subs as well.

After several weather delays; the Windthorst Trojans will take on the Dallas Gateway Charter Academy tonight at 6:00 PM in Gainesville. The boys are coming off a big win over Tolar and we hope to keep the momentum going. GO TROJANS!

Both Archer County teams, (2A) Windthorst and (3A) Holliday lost to charter schools this week. Windthorst lost to Dallas Gateway Charter Academy and Holliday lost to Faith Family Academy also of Dallas. In Windthorst case, we played bad.

[Begin rant mode]
However, I have gone on record before and will say again, public schools should NOT be playing charter schools. If I could choose the 12 best players in our area and place on one team, then I'm sure we'd go a long way in the playoffs too. It is not fair to the kids; period!

Yep, when she went to the bench with 3 fouls in the first half with and Bells went on a 12-3 run to take a 13 point halftime lead. Tough to dig yourself out of that kind of hole against a good team!!

Martins Mill will still be the team to beat in the region though - only lose two seniors. They beat Decatur 68-52, who whipped us 37-56. They also played Bowie tight losing 50-53. They have advanced to the State Tournament 9 out of the last 10 years - missed last year.
