Distance runners rejoice: UIL strikes rule preventing athletes from running three races at 400 meters and beyond
By Corbett Smith..Staff Writer

"Distance runners will now be able to compete in three "curved" running events at UIL-sanctioned track meets, thanks to the UIL striking language limiting athletes to only two events at the 400-meter distance and beyond.

The new rule, if signed into effect by the commissioner of education, will go into effect for the 2016-17 track and field season.

UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt expressed his reservations about the change, both in Sunday's Standing Committee on Athletics meeting and Monday's full council meeting. He said he was against expansion for two reasons: there are already a number of events for middle- and long-distance runners, specifically cross country; and any change could alter team scoring in meets.

He pointed to the addition of the 4x200-meter relay as something that has shifted the scoring balance at track meets to favor a sprint-heavy team.

"Any time we monkey with rules we've had for track and field that we've had for so long and has worked really well, every time we have, it's come back to bite us," Breithaupt said. "I'm sensitive to the things that have been in place a long time. You've got to be careful about taking down the fence 'til you know why someone built it."

Not sure why Breithaupt has reservations - what is the difference between a sprinter running 3 races at 400M or less and a runner racing three or these four: 400, 800, 1600, or 3200?
